One Year Reading Cycle

Reading the Torah קריאת התורה

In ancient times, on Shabbat, Yom sheni (Monday) and Yom revi’i (Thursday), the morning service included the reading of the Torah. This most likely became the custom after the destruction of the Temple and helps explain the adoption of the one year Torah reading cycle. For the three-year cycle, customarily used in the Land, is read in one year if readings occur three times each week. In modern synagogue practice, the entire parashah (Torah section) is read each Shabbat.”
